The Royal Botanical Garden of Naples is in all respects a noble estate and truly secular only if we consider its origins dated back to December 28, 1807, the day on which the structure was founded on the decree of Giuseppe Bonaparte.
Actually, the project had been launched earlier by King Ferdinando IV but slid inexorably because of the motions of the revolt of 1799.
However, once work began on the construction of the immense estate of green Foria street, it was clear to those who rely on the onerous task.
The chosen because they were two, were the architects Giuliano de Fazio and Gaspare Maria Paoletti, the first author of the monumental entrance facade and the central avenue and the second is responsible for the design of the lower part of the garden. But once completed the work of building , you had to decide who to entrust the direction of the structure.
Here then is spotted in the person of Michele Tenore the first director of the botanical garden, which organized the natural complex according to scientific criteria clearly defined.
During his long tenure, Tenore enriched the collections of the garden with over 9,000 species of plants and made known the beauty of the garden in the world.
Then the rudder passed to Guglielmo Gasparrini: it is he who has the merit of introducing an area intended to accommodate specimens of rare alpine plants and the construction of a heated greenhouse.

To Gasparrini succeeded by many other makers , but not all proved up to the task.
So it was that in 1906 it fell to Fridiano Cavara, the then director, to develop a plan for economic recovery and structural real garden.
First, Cavara established the experimental station for medicinal plants and started work on the new headquarters of the institute.
But unfortunately the dark times for the green townhouse were not finished.
The Second World War was, in fact , at the gates, and would have brought devastation and destruction.
So it was really difficult the task entrusted to Giuseppe Catalano, who after World War II had to revive the fortunes of the natural area, freeing the meadows from concrete floors and enriching of trees.
So in 1963 we see the first signs of recovery thanks to the direction of Aldo Merola, under whose administration the garden reach economic independence and administrative, which makes it possible to obtain funding to improve the appearance of the structure, starting from the creation of several greenhouses, a heating system and water supply and the official establishment of the professional gardener in the botanical garden.

Still, it was in those years that were cultivated relationships with major European and nice gardens and the educational aspect of the complex.
Despite the subsequent 80 earthquake that struck the seal again, we can say that today the real-century complex, belonging to Federico II University of mathematical, physical and natural sciences, has maintained almost intact its everlasting charm.
Twelve-hectare, 9,000 plant species and nearly 25,000 copies, here is an oasis of nature and that as stated in the act of its construction was to be: “A structure for the education of the public and to the multiplication of spices useful to health, agriculture and industry”.
