A journey in the footsteps of Zheng He, the Columbus Chinese. Is one proposed tomorrow by Città della Scienza in Naples with the exhibition “Orientiamoci” held within the series of events collected under the title of “Revolutionary Inventions from Ancient China“. The traveling exhibition proposed is a real adventure that starts from the dawn of Chinese sailing, focusing on the great level of innovation that has always characterized the country of the Great Wall, and that continues today.
The route takes the visitor to discover the patterns of Chinese ships, from those used over two thousand years ago, to the flagship of the famous navigator Zheng He, who in the fifteenth century turned over 30 countries across Asia and Africa, covering a distance of more than 100 thousand kilometers. His legendary skills navigator led him, in fact, at the head of the fleet of the Ming Dynasty with which he managed to get from China to Africa, a century before Columbus landed in America. But the exhibition on navigation with a diverse mix of compass, the “compass fish” of the eleventh century. iron which, under certain conditions, assumed magnetic properties, that obtained with a wire suspended in the perpendicular over a magnet.
The journey to discover the innovations of the ancient history of China continues with a section dedicated to the measurement of time and astronomy. The more than 40 inventions on display are connected to interactive exhibits, in the tradition of hands-on science center, with the aim of illustrating some of the scientific phenomena underlying the inventions on display: from magnetism to the movements of the stars, from printing techniques to the seismograph. In this way, the public has the opportunity to learn some of the most fascinating scientific phenomena reconstructing the origin and comparing the path of European discovery, in the years after the Renaissance, with the similar happened in China centuries before.
