At the end of the eighties in the narrow streets of the Historical Center of Naples was around a French art lover. Those were different times. The belly of the ancient Partenope had not yet been plowed by the subway art. We then thought Ernest Pignon -Ernest, a “visual artist” was born and raised in Paris, to fill this gap. In Holy Week of 1988, Pignon made a miracle bringing art to the streets of Old Town. Pignon acted at night. In the midst of the people in the streets: pasted on the walls of the drawings on newsprint, often inspired by the masterpieces of Caravaggio in the city, Luca Giordano, Ribera or Stanzione. Inserted them in the urban context, seeking thereby the roots of Mediterranean culture, questioning the relationship between life and death so strong and present in Neapolitan culture.
After 25 years away from that intervention, the Institut francais Naples has decided to pay tribute to the work of Ernest Pignon embracing project of a group of six students in Milan and Paris, coordinated by Luca Avanzini, which are proposed to rethink the experience of Pignon in Naples involving firsthand the inhabitants of the Old Town.
The “Grenoble” then fielded a full calendar of events to celebrate the work of the artist in Paris, which will culminate in the meeting with Pignon scheduled March 6, 6.30 pm, at the Institut français in via Crispi, followed by screening of the documentary “Easter according to Ernest Pignon –Ernest”.
The screening will be accompanied by the exhibition of a selection of shots of Alain Volut, French photographer who documented the twenty five years ago by Pignon -Ernest in Naples, enriched by the writings drawn, from the images shown, by the students of some schools bells involved in the project. The exhibition will be open until March 22.
