Folkloristic event unique in its kind, takes place every year during the month of July until mid-August. The river Tenza, that bathes the small town of Salerno, overflows from its natural bed and floods the town center through a course artificial. In the past this event was necessary for the hygiene of the streets and shops, to clean up the main course, the excrement of pack animals during the summer.
Necessity was then transformed into virtues. And so for years thousands of tourists every year, they discover “‘to Chiena” between the myth and fantasy, legend and current affairs. Every Saturday and Sunday from mid-July to mid-August are the many events on the calendar to which you can watch or participate. There is a bucket: in the early afternoon, dressed for the beach and equipped with buckets you go down to the streets to throw buckets of water over each other. And now here we understand that the fun is guaranteed.
Then there is the walk: Sunday mornings everyone can take to the road with your feet in the water without fear of being wet, sipping an aperitif in one of the rooms that overlook along the main street. Families, children, young and old, find themselves walking with ankle deep in a relaxed and festive atmosphere typical of the holidays and before lunch.
Finally, there is the chiena midnight: at midnight, thousands of tourists, is literally flooded the city for those who are the last chiene year. On this occasion, including musical performances and unusual night scenery, creating a charming environment, almost surreal that brings the event to reach the climax of its charm, giving the audience unbelievable experiences.
But we see with the program (though not official) of the activities.
The deviations of the river Tenza will be held on:
Saturday 18 and Sunday, July 19
Saturday 25 and Sunday, July 26
Saturday 1st and Sunday, August 2
Saturday 8 and Sunday, Aug. 9
Sunday 16 and Monday, Aug. 17.
On Saturday there will be the Stroll from 15 to 16 hours and from 12 to 13, and the “buckets” from 15 to 16.
On 16 and 17 August there will be the traditional Chiene Midnight.
Each weekend will feature a main theme.
The first will be Chiena Ecological: the cleaning of the banks of the river by the citizens themselves, and with the involvement of schools
The second weekend will be the topic Sport: a day of fun and healthy competition.
The third weekend will be dedicated to children: the Association of Giordano Bruno, for years present and active in the area, will organize fun activities but also their awareness for children.
And always stay on the subject of recreational events, even this year will miss the now traditional War of Colors.
Finally, not to mention the social and solidarity, in closing Chiene day could not miss the Chiena in Pozzo, a day dedicated to raising funds for the construction of a well in one of the poorest regions of Africa.
