The countdown has started. From August 3 to 5, in Somma Vesuviana, near Naples, to life the long-awaited “Lucerne Festival”, which every four years celebrated the Madonna of the Snow.
For the occasion, as many as 11 roads of mediaeval Casamale will stage a show magical illuminated by thousands of small oil lanterns arranged on circles, triangles and squares of wood in perspective flight.
A must, suspended between art, history, food and tradition, also to discover an original Somma Vesuviana and its treasures: the monumental monastic complex of Santa Maria del Pozzo, D’Alagno Castle, through the Church of the Collegiate and the villa Augustan. And there will be dancing and folk music and culinary excellence, as the tomatoes of Vesuvius or the wine “catalanesca”.
The Fire of the oil lamps, the Water with its reflections in mirrors, Earth generous of volcano with its products, the Air carrying the scent from backyards and basements. During the Festival of Terra Murata, the four elements will combine to create an atmosphere of alchemy.
Two, the main gates along the Aragonese walls, allowing visitors to venture on a trip out of time. Each courtyard during the event will be decorated with ferns and gorse from the Mount Somma and will feature wine, tomatoes and fruits. The streets, drawn by oil lamps, represent the gates: a dialogue between life and death with unusual “cap’ e ‘mort”, carved pumpkins with eyes and nose and a small light inside, which will hang from doorways contributing to make it even more mysterious atmosphere of the festival. At the entrance of every alley, nativity scenes or allegories made with puppets rag and some with people living feasting. The party, the result of a deep, inextricable tangle of religious rites and pagan, culminates the suggestion last night when an all-female singing old will spring from balconies and terraces to the passage of the Virgin Mary in procession marking the end of intense three days.
