The pizza that conquered the Savoia Royal Family

The pizza Margherita, the most acclaimed of the pizzas, is 127 years old. Its birthday has recently been celebrated in the place where it was created: at the Antica Pizzeria Brandi, in Sant’Anna di Palazzo. It was in the month of June in1869, when the master Raffaele Esposito, together with his wife Maria Giovanna Brandi, served a pizza topped with mozzarella, tomato and basil to King Umberto I and Queen Margherita, in the Royal Palace of Capodimonte.[charme-gallery]The queen appreciated it so much, that she honoured the dish. The diploma still stands on the walls of the pizzeria to this day. This famous dish carries the name of the queen it was created for, “Margherita”!
