Hand-crafted, terracotta emotions That is what Tiziana D’Auria makes in her workshop in Naples city centre, just around the corner from the bustling Via San Gregorio Armeno. More a gallery of nativity art, the premises display splendid masterpieces, such as figurines whose terracotta heads are painted in oils and fitted with glass eyes before being joined to carved wooden hands and feet by wire and hemp then clad in garments made from local silk or fabrics found in dusty churches Reproducing 18th century models, her works of art are thoroughly researched and made using modern techniques that nevertheless preserve their classical nature. [charme-gallery]Her figures vary in height from 10 to 60 centimetres and are exported to Spain, the USA, the UK and northern Italy as well as for the Neapolitan market. This year, the D’Auria collection includes not only flights of angels, the Wise Men, and the Nativity figures, but also exclusive and highly collectable rosy-cheeked children, sleeping in white sheets on beds of twigs, leaves and moss and enclosed in glass bells. Tiziana, who is also involved in restoring antiques, can count on the help of her family in creating nativity scenes and figures, gifts for all occasions and souvenirs, and in running the two stores.
