Pompeii’s main street, leading from the Forum all the way through to the Porta di Sarno on the other side of the city.
From my travel diary: “The most amazing thing about Pompeii is that it is an entire town, filled with all the things you’d expect to see in a big city – government buildings, places of worship, public squares, busy roads, shops, baths, stadiums and theatres, houses both big and small and more. This is not just a few ruined buildings scattered around, it is a snapshot of an ancient civilisation, and it is surprisingly familiar and modern.”
